Oh, the irony. I received my B.S. in Visual Merchandising and Product Development where I spent four years studying the ins and outs of consumer behavior - why we buy and how to entice people to buy more with compelling visuals, discreet tricks, a thoughtful assortment and impeccable service.
Though I knew about all these techniques (and applied them at work), I never looked inward and frequently found myself drowning in the same clutter I had been hauling from place to place all over again (including across the country!). The turning point came when I was an overwhelmed new mom facing an emergency surgery.
When I found out about decluttering and simplicity, I took baby steps to ruthlessly reduce our belongings by 75% (with family's input) and started transforming our home using efficient, practical strategies. The time alone we gained back from having less stuff to manage is worth it (plus the money and energy saved is pretty nice too!). I shifted my perspective on shopping and consumer habits and I realized how simplifying encourages us to stop chasing the next best thing and embrace our true desires to create a life of meaning, authenticity and joy.
One of the hardest parts of decluttering that isn't talked about enough is getting rid of mental, internal struggles that keeps us stuck - not just the physical items. The good thing is that when we start to release our physical clutter, the emotional stuff starts to follow - it becomes a significant part of the growth process. Being ruthless with clutter in all aspects of life will help you to avoid falling back into the clutter trap.
